Outer burial containers provide protection for the grave as the casket alone cannot support the weight of the earth. Using an outer burial container provides better maintenance programs by keeping the grave from collapsing overtime, therefore keeping maintenance costs to a minimum.
Grave liners provide the minimum protection. There are no seals of any kind. Vaults are more substantial in protecting from the elements of the earth by having different interior liners and seals.
